CHERYL'S HEART
This project is very personal to me, as I created and named it after one of my first doula clients. Her name is Cheryl Watson and she has become such a close friend who I enjoy spending time with, above and beyond our doula/client relationship. Early on, I realized her love for journaling as we began reading through her journals from 20 years ago. We've laughed and we've cried but we have grown to know that we crossed paths for a reason. God put her in my life just as much as He put me in hers. One of the final gifts to her close loved ones will be goodbye letters to each of them. Since she can no longer write, due to her disease process, I have taken on the scribing portion of putting her feelings on paper. She has 4 children, Matthew, Stephen, Rachel and Hannah, a brother Bill and her husband of 39 years, John. She also wants to leave one for her special friend, Julie, who has been by her side for years now.
The joy that writing these letters brings to her is palpable and that led me to the desire of honoring her spirit in a way that will carry on into other homes and touch so many lives. Cheryl's heart is in Colorado, where this picture shows the aspen leaf as a symbol of that, along with this homemade quilt sent to her by a dear friend, Deb. Cheryl's hands have touched so many, including myself. She has truly shown me the ultimate gift of faith, grace and the desire to give to others until the last breath. She continues to tell me, "we're in this together," as she is so gracious to offer support to me as we share many heartfelt moments during our time together. Her favorite scripture is below.
